I’ve asked on Twitter, but can’t seem to find an answer: Does anyone happen to know whether this was intentional for National Coming Out Day, or mere coincidence?
Jonathan Winn said on Facebook that a “contact” from Charlotte Center City Partners said it was intentional.
Seems way too unlikely a coincidence to be unintentional to me.
I just got confirmation of intentional lighting:

“Zuni Johnson, a Wells Fargo employee, confirmed the intentional lighting with qnotes today.
“The rainbow theme on Duke Energy’s lights were intentional, Johnson says, and were the result of requests from Wells Fargo’s employee LGBT group and conversations with local LGBT leaders and Pride Charlotte organizers. Wachovia/Wells Fargo was a sponsor of this year’s Pride festivities (as they have been in the past), and hosted a “RENT” sing-along at the Knight Theater last night.
“So, there you have it. Confirmed. In a nicely wrapped, sky-scraping box, a gift to Charlotte’s gays from Wells Fargo. I knew good things would happen once the Queen City got a taste of San Fran.”
I heard Ellen DeGeneres talk about it on twitter, so that’s pretty much coast to coast!
Talk about the Duke Energy tower specifically?
Nothing like a giant gay robot to spruce up downtown.
Here are some photos I took of it last night

OMG, stop calling it Voltron. It’s just stupid.
Call what Voltron? The Voltron building?
No, the “Duke Engergy Center”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Energy_Center The nickname Voltron was made up right here on CLTblog in April. I don’t mind buildings having nicknames but Voltron is just flat-out stupid (and childish). I’ve heard it called “The DECk” before, which may not sound all that great either but at least it makes a lot more sense than Voltron.
I like Voltron.
Someone say VOLTron?

Love it. I prefer the name “Power Tower” for the Duke Energy Building.
Power Tower’s pretty good too.
VOLTRON!
I like “VOLTron,” but “Giant Gay Robot” is almost as good, IMHO.
Does anyone know what the normal colors mean?? I heard once that when its blue the panthers are playing but I have seen white, pink, green, red, and purple as well all on various nights. One night it was flipping blue to red and back again. I just moved here and can’t find out what the colors mean…
