It’s National Library Week, check out the PLCMC

Fountains at the main PLCMC branch uptown.
Confession: I am thoroughly addicted to the library. Who wouldn’t be, with the vast selection of books, CDs, DVDs, books on tape/CD, magazines, and events? Best of all, as long as you turn in your items on time, it’s free! The way I see it, not only is it economically sensible to get stuff free from the library, but consider all the trees saved by sharing books and magazines with the community.
Dig in your wallet to see if you have a card already. If you don’t, you can apply for one at any PLCMC (Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County) branch or on their website. You can have up to 99 items (under most circumstances) checked out from any of the 24 local branches and can return them to any branch in the system. If you locate something in the catalog that isn’t at your preferred location, it can be sent to the one most convenient for you. You can also manage your account and pay any late fees online.
If you are like me and need a little help keeping up with all of your items, sign up for a free account at Elf to get email reminders just before your items are due. I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me.
The library also offers an amazing number and variety of events, most of which are as free as their collection. Events range from stories for kids, to crafting events, and even to Wii gaming events. A list of events and classes can be found here.
Drop by your local branch sometime. Don’t miss out on anything PLCMC has to offer!
The Uptown branch (and surely others, to a lesser extent) has a great computer lab, too. PCs, Macs, scanners, printers (I’d guess there’s a fee for prints), and I think even some accessibility accessories (screen readers, oversized keyboards…). It’s a great resource.
do they charge for dvd rentals?
DVD rentals are $2 for 3 days, as far as I remember. Rental books are $2 for 2 weeks.
What are rental books?
Rental books are the newest releases from popular authors.
I you pick up the most recent creative loafing they talk about how they may build a new library uptown. Apparently a private company wants to team up with the city for the development. Very interesting article I suggest u pick it up.
I need to read the article, but will go ahead and say that South County and Morrison are tremendously busy and Charlotte could probably use another branch down this way. The Carmel branch is a mystery to me because it’s rarely busy, but I hear they are a popular branch for returning items.
i suggest more wii game tournaments with better marketing
I love love love my library card. I rent movies, CDs, books! So great. I know a few branches have free WiFi too.
Most DVDs are free tho unless they are marked as the $2 rentals which usually are the newer movies.
