Facebook to build new data center in Rutherford, NC
Posted on 12 Nov 2010 by Justin Ruckman
The project is expected to take 18 months to finish, and according to Bev Perdue’s press release, “additional construction phases may be possible in the future, depending on business needs”. This means Facebook is joining the ranks of Apple, Google & American Express, and taking advantage of North Carolina’s cheap rural land, low energy costs, and readily available fiber optics.
“The release also touts the technology going into making the new data center as energy-efficient as possible, and states that it will use “technologies developed by Facebook to rely on fewer than half the computing power (and energy related energy consumption) that a similar data center would have required” a few years ago.”
The facility will likely employ 35–45 full-time workers, plus around 250 more during construction. Projected cost is $450 million.
Ruthorford is about an hour and a half west of Charlotte.
