Fall dog-friendly events

The weather is finally starting to cool off from the oppressive heat we had this summer. That means that everyone wants to get out and enjoy themselves even more. Don’t leave your dog out of the fun! Here are some great events happening around town that are either dog-friendly, or benefit some great Charlotte animal-related non-profits.
Free Rabies Clinic — Saturday, September 10, 7am-11am, 8315 Byrum Drive, Charlotte, NC 28217 - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care & Control will be promoting rabies prevention awareness and education by celebrating World Rabies Day at our monthly rabies clinic on Saturday, September 10, 2011. Mecklenburg County residents are encouraged to bring their pets to the shelter (located at 8315 Byrum Drive Charlotte, NC 28217) for a free rabies shot between the hours of 7:00am and 11:00am. The line will be cut off at 11:00am, however everyone who is in line before 11:00am will be served. Please make sure dogs are on leashes and cats are in carriers. You will need to provide identification to show you live in Mecklenburg County such as a valid driver’s license. The free vaccinations that are being used at the clinic are made possible by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control and Pfizer Animal Health.
The DogGone Good Time Festival - Saturday, September 10, 8:00am – 11:30am, Anne Spring Close Greenway, Rush Pavilion, 1300 N. Hwy 21 Bypass, Fort Mill - The DogGone Good Time Festival is the largest annual fundraising event to support the Humane Society of York County (HSYC). Last year, around 300 people and 50 dogs attended the first event and they raised $6300. The Festival features the following:
- 5K Trail Run. 8:00am. Check-in and registration begins at 7:00am. Pre-registration $25 and event day registration $30. Event day registration will close at 7:45am. The entry fee includes an event t-shirt and refreshments. (Unfortunately we can not guarantee a t-shirt for event day registration. They will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis)
- Awards will be given to the following:
- Top male and female finishers receive overall awards
- Top three finishers in each age division (19 and under, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60 and up)
- 5K Trail Run award announcements will be made around 9:25am, prior to the start of the Dog Walk.
- Awards will be given to the following:
- Dog Walk. 9:30am. Enjoy a nice walk on the 1.3 mile hiking trail around scenic Lake Haigler. Registration $15.
- Individual and Team Fundraising. Set up your fundraising page and seek donations from your friends and family! All participants who raise $40 (inclusive of their registration fee) will receive an event t-shirt and gift bag! The top three individual fundraisers and the top team fundraiser will receive special recognition.
- SportsClips Tennis Ball Raffle. $5 per ticket or $20 for 5 tickets. First prize $500, second prize $250 and third prize $100. Ticket numbers will be written on tennis balls and placed in the field at the event. A dog will fetch the tennis balls to choose the winners.

Woofstock - Saturday, September 10, 11am – 4pm, Amos’ Southend, 1423 S Tryon St - Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love and Blue Rodge Boxer Rescue are teaming up to bring you Woofstock! There will be vendors, animal rescues, silent auction, 60′s themed photo ops for your dog, food and drink and great music, and lots of adoptable dogs! $5 donation at the door gets you your first drink on the house. Cuda from Cuda Cares will be there meeting her fans and giving smooches.

Shamrock & Roll Over Party - Saturday, September 10, 5pm – 8pm, Connolly’s, 115 E. Fifth St. Charlotte, NC 28202 — $20 gets you all you can eat and drink; food supplied by BoJangles. The raffle tickets are $5 and go towards the prize of the weekend getaway in Savannah for St. Patrick’s Day weekend at the Mansion on Forsyth. You don’t have to be present to win. Benefits the Dublin Dog Foundation.
Indoor Dog Park - Sunday, September 18, 11am – 3pm, Dogtopia of Charlotte, 616 Springbrook Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217 - Looking for some doggy socialization in a comfortable setting? Come to an Indoor “Dog Park” play date at Dogtopia! They provide the cleanup supplies, play equipment and your dog gets to play with other furry friends in a climate controlled environment. The dog park is hosted the 3rd Sunday of each month. Small dogs/lower energy – 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Large dogs/higher energy – 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Just $5/dog for current Dogtopia customers and $10/dog for all others. Dogs Ahoy! - Sunday, September 18, 2pm – 4pm, Lake Norman - Put on your life jacket and join them on the lake Sunday, Sept 18 from 2 — 4 pm. Tickets are $30 and include one drink (cash bar available) and hors d’oeuvres as well as raffle items, good conversation and fun. All proceeds will benefit the Charlotte Chapter of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. The boat will be leaving from the Championship Yacht Charters dock at 18665 Harborside Drive, Cornelius, NC 28031. 6th Annual AARF Animal Awareness and Adoption Extravaganza - Wednesday, September 21, 11:30am – 1:30pm, Founders Hall, Bank of America Corporate Center - This the 6th Annual Animal Expo. The purpose of the Expo is to give exposure to local Animal Welfare organizations, to raise funds for those organizations, to find animals furever homes, and bring awareness to the public of the tremendous pet overpopulation issue and the importance of spaying, neutering, and adopting. All proceeds obtained from this event will be distributed evenly to the Animal Welfare groups in attendance.
- This year, at least 12 Local Animal Organizations are attending including the Humane Society of Charlotte. All groups will have up to 4 animals on site available for adoption, as well as information about all of their other adoptable animals, their organization, and their volunteer opportunities.
- The top five pictures from AARF’s Photo Contest in each category (Top Dog, Cutest Cat, and Most Adorable Other Pet) will be displayed and the winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) will be chosen by your donations.
- Register for Door Prizes, including $100 Visa Cards, VIP tables and/or Gift Cards to EpiCentre clubs/restaurants, Doggie day care passes, Vet gift certificates, hair salon, fitness, and spa packages.
- There will be Goodie Bags to the first 400 attendees with coupons, animal care information, key chains, magnets, gift certificates, and tons of other great items.
- Monetary donations, as well as donations of unopened cat and dog food, and clean, good condition blankets and towels, to go to Second Harvest Food Bank to stock their pantry will be accpeted. Many families accessing the Food Pantries or Meals on Wheels programs share their people food and other supplies with their pets, so the need for pet food, etc is desperate.
- AARF will have an Information Table to help you with any other needs, Kid specific give-a-ways, as well as helpful information about pets including pet care essentials, things to think about when adopting a new pet, how to keep your pet healthy, importance of spay/neuter, and pet myths vs. reality, etc.
AKC/APBF Responsible Dog Owner Day — Saturday, September 24, 10am – 2pm, Dogtopia of Charlotte, 616 Springbrook Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217 - The AKC/APBF Responsible Dog Owner Day is to educate, recognize, and encourage responsible breed ownership. Responsible Dog Owner Day is an annual event that the American Kennel Club puts on and involves hundreds of rescue organizations across the nation. Activities include an agility demonstration, AKC Canine Good Citizen testing, a raffle, responsible breed ownership education, a microchip clinic, and more. This is a free event that is open to the public.
Canine Communication Seminar - Saturday, September 24, 1:00pm – 2:30pm, Humane Society of Charlotte Training Center, 2700 Toomey Avenue - Develop mutual trust and respect with your dog. The presenter is Robin Brown, Humane Society of Charlotte Animal Behavior Manager. Topics will include: Talking to each other — Dog-to-Dog and Dog-to-Human, Dominating your dog and why it is a bad idea, Learn how what appears to be disobedience is just miscommunication. ROCKERS to the RESCUE — Saturday, September 24, 8pm – 11pm, The Chop Shop in NODA - The Humane Society of Charlotte’s 1st Annual “ROCKERS to the RESCUE” with performances by: Grown Up Avenger Stuff! Chelsea Daggers! Born Under Punches! Blanco Diablo! GoGo Pilots! Rusted Radio Dial and DJ Brad Pressley. Great door prizes from Fu’s Tattoos, Jack Beagles, Orange Olive Hair Gallery, 300 East and Ink Floyd. SIX BANDS for $10! Show starts at 8pm. Pet CPR & First Aid Class - Sunday, September 25, 1:30pm – 4:00pm, Dogtopia of Charlotte, 616 Springbrook Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217 - $ 65 per person (includes book and CD, handouts and certificate), $ 45 per person (without book and CD, handouts and certificate). Topics covered will include: Symptoms and care for common ailments and emergencies, instructions for creating a pet first aid kit, giving medications and how to recognize emergencies, tips on maintaining your pet’s health and well-being, and how to perform pet CPR. South Park Mall Adoption Event - Saturday, October 1, 10am – 4pm, South Park Mall, 4400 Sharon Rd., Charlotte, NC - Come to the center court at South Park Mall on the first Saturday of each month to meet orphaned animals available for adoption from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control. Dogs and cats ready for adoption and shelter staff and volunteers will be available to answer all of your questions. Dogtoberfest — Saturday, October 1st, 2011, 12 pm — 6pm, Jackalope Jacks, Philosophers Stone & Kennedy’s — Benefits Dog Days of Charlotte. Corn Hole Registrations is 12pm, Event Kick off is 1pm, Raffle Drawing at 5pm with the expectation of the event ending between 5 & 6pm. Additionally, Dogtoberfest will include: Corn hole tournament, live music, food & drink specials with beer tubs on the lawn, doggie costume contest, raffle table & drawing, photo booth, and promotional booths from a variety of vendors.
SuperQuest for Project HALO - Saturday, October 1, 2pm – 6pm - Uptown Charlotte - Welcome to SuperQuest for Project HALO: Release the Hounds! Team entry fees are tax deductible and will go to support the efforts of Project HALO, a Charlotte based no-kill animal shelter. This is not a scavenger hunt, it is a linear race where each team must complete the same clues in the same order! In addition to helping homeless animals, your entry fee includes: A shirt for each racer (which you should race in), light lunch/ heavy appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages at a rest stop somewhere along the race, prizes for the first place team, a 4-hour race of your life. To sign up, your team must include 4 members. Your entry fee covers the admission for 4 racers. Racers must be at least 21 years of age. There is a cap of 15 teams for this SuperQuest, and registration closes two weeks prior to the race. For this event, your team should plan to arrive at the Fox & Hound in Uptown Charlotte by 1:30PM at the latest. Upon arrival, your team will check in, sign waivers, and receive your team t-shirts to race in. At promptly 2:00PM, you will be given instructions on what to expect, and any questions will be answered. Your race will last approximately 4 hours. All you need to bring is comfortable shoes, and about $10 in cash. SuperQuest for Project HALO will occur rain or shine, so if there’s inclement weather, dress appropriately! There will be stops at local bars and restaurants along the way where you can certainly order an adult beverage on your dime, so if you choose to drink, bring money for that, too. There are no tasks which require drinking alcohol. Race registration will begin at Fox & Hound at 1PM. Instructions for the race will begin at 2:00PM SHARP, and you will receive your first clue at approximately 2:15PM. Racers must be registered by 2:00PM to compete in the race.
First Friday Yappy Hour - Friday, October 7, 5pm-7pm, Dogtopia of Charlotte, 616 Springbrook Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217 - Love the stories we tell you about who your dog played with at daycare? Now is your chance to meet those dogs and their parents! On the first Friday of every month we’ll have a “First Friday Yappy Hour” from 5-7pm. We’ll have beer, wine and soda for everyone, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Your dogs will get to enjoy some off-leash play while parents get a chance to socialize. Please keep in mind that dogs of all sizes will be welcome. We will not be able to have a separate area for large and small dogs. This event is free for everyone, but if you are not a current Dogtopia customer you will be required to sign a waiver certifying that your dog is up to date on vaccinations and in good health.
Pet Family Reunion - Saturday, October 15, 11am-5pm, 8315 Byrum Drive, Charlotte, NC 28217 - It’s Animal Care & Control’s first ever, Pet Family Reunion! It’s a day to celebrate all the animals that have been adopted from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control shelter and to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month by perhaps considering adding another furry friend to your family! There will be entertainment and have some of their long time community partners on hand to provide you information on Pet First Aid, Doggie Daycare, Pet Boarding Facilities, Pet Sitting, Pet Clean Up and more! Activities will include an open house of the Animal Care & Control shelter, a microchip clinic, music, Stormwater Services “Scoop the Poop” education and reduced adoption fees for “veteran” pets.
Barktoberfest — Saturday, October 22, 2011, CBS Radio Doghouse, 401 W. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202 — The American Cancer Society will be hosting the 4th annual Barktoberfest, at the CBS Radio Doghouse. With a $10 registration fee, guests will receive food, nonalcoholic beverages, goodies for pets, silent auction, and entry into the Halloween pet costume contest. A portion of all proceeds will go to The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against cancer.

Ties & Tails Gala - Saturday, November 5, 6pm – 10pm, Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge — Grand Ballroom - Advanced Ticket Purchase Required. The Ties & Tails Gala is a beautiful evening reception featuring a cocktail hour, live entertainment, open bar, dinner and dancing, and a silent and live auction. The Gala allows the Humane Society of Charlotte to celebrate their mission and recognize those that make a difference in the lives of homeless pets. Last year’s inaugural Gala was a smashing success, with tickets selling out weeks before the event. This event has been chosen as the best inaugural event by South Park Magazine, so don’t miss it! Well-behaved canine guests are also invited however space is limited. This is the only black tie event in Charlotte where dogs are invited! Individual tickets are $175 ($97/ticket is tax deductible) and tables of 10 may be purchased before Sept. 9th for $1,650 ($87/ticket is tax-deductible).
